This piece was commissioned by the Traverse Theatre for Edinburgh’s main Festival . Francisco Negrin was asked to research young Scottish composers and he selected James MacMillan and Craig Armstrong, both unknown at the time. MacMillan composed Tourist Variations while Craig Armstrong composed the companion piece, Anna, which was directed by Ian Brown. Craig went on to be a celebrated pop musician and film composer working with the likes of Björk and Baz Luhrmann. James Macmillan is now recognised as one of the greatest contemporary composers.
