This production of Shostakovich’s masterpiece pushed the possibilities offered by the opera house in Leipzig to the limits, with a monumental scenography that was in permanent deconstruction, symbolising the unstoppable decay of human society when driven by selfishness. Mirroring the musical structure that goes from realism via grotesque satire to profound lament, the show evolves from a complex multilevel Tsarist flour mill to a Kafka-like black humour nightmare world, and ends as a gaping abyss, showing how a broken system cannot be replaced by another system if compassion is not the leading force behind the change.
