Arabella

The intention of this production was to show the really lyrical and tender aspects of the piece. It presented the story as a Viennese Cinderella, and augmented the famous final staircase scene with a series of spectacular scene changes. It was loved by people who had until then thought Arabella was boring and rejected by those who still wanted to see it as a satyrical operetta. The Leeds version of the ball scene was completely redesigned afresh for Ghent and Antwerpen. This was Francisco Negrin truly attempting to find ways to make people listen differently to a score he loves and a story much deeper and more universal than is usually thought.
